Top Baby Care Tips

It can be a daunting task as parents to figure out how to care for their baby sometimes. Therefore at Cussons we have decided to share our top 7 tips for caring for your precious bundle of joy.

  1. Sleeping: A healthy sleeping routine is very important for the health and growth of a baby. It is highly recommended to try to form a sleeping routine in as little as 2-3 weeks after your baby is born. An over tired baby is a cranky one. Having a sleeping pattern will allow you to plan your time better and will make for a happy baby.
  2. Nursing/Feeding: A new born needs to nurse every few hours. The nursing can last up to an hour at a time. Ensure that you have a nice comfortable place to nurse your baby, grab a bottle of water or a book to help you pass the time. Once the baby is ready to start eating solids, start the baby gently with vegetable purees rather than fruit. Give at least a week before you move on to a new type of food to ensure it works with your baby’s system.
  3. Diapering: Babies have very sensitive bottoms, with wearing disposable diapers, their skin is prone to diaper rash pretty easily. Try to keep your baby’s bottom dry. This can be achieved by changing diapers frequently, letting their skin breathe a little before you put a new diaper on. In the event of a diaper rash, use over the counter diaper rash creams, and wash your baby with luke warm water. Do not use baby powder, the small particles can easily get into the baby’s lungs.
  4. Skin Care: Your baby’s skin is very soft and delicate. It is important to take care of it. Sunscreen shouldn’t be applied on babies younger than 6 month, therefore keep them in shade until they are older. After bath time apply light, natural baby lotion to moisturize the baby’s skin.
  5. Bathing: Make bath time fun and interactive for the baby. If you bath your little one in a bath tub, ensure that there is no more than 1 inch of water. This will be plenty to allow the baby to play and splash. Never leave your baby unattended in the bath, they can easily get hurt. Use a mild baby cleanser to clean them up. Make bath time fun by making up silly songs and interact with your baby.
  6. Travel: Babies like schedules and routines, try your best to keep to your baby’s schedules even whilst traveling. The routine will sooth and calm the baby even in an unfamiliar environment.
  7. Crying: Babies cry, it is a known fact. Check the basics is she hungry, sleepy or is her diaper wet.. If its none of those try and swaddle the baby in your arms, sometimes all they want is to be held and rocked, put on soothing lullaby or sing to your baby softly. Try to burp the baby, maybe it is gassy or has colic. There will always be a time when everything seems fine and the baby still cries, the key is to stay calm and ride the storm.

As a parent, you know your baby the best. There is no right or wrong, just go with your instincts and you will be great. Happy beginnings
